4 Tips for Successful ERP Training
A successful ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) installation and implementation is more than just getting the technology in place. In fact, companies that invest less than 17% of their overall ERP budget on training are significantly less likely to reach company goals than those who do. In many situations, ERP training is overlooked. This can have many negative consequences, ultimately including a failed ERP implementation.
Here are four tips to ensure successful ERP training.
- Make ERP training a priority. After all, what good is an ERP solution if the users are not able to use it? Different groups may be better off training on different subjects as well. For example, executives and managers may benefit more from an overview while project team members would be better off with configuration training, and the users with functional training.
- Use multiple training methods. Your ERP vendor will be key in the training process so make sure you fully understand what they offer before you buy. Four good vendor training methods to consider using include e-Learning courses utilizing simulations, virtual workshops/seminars, traditional classroom training, and onsite, personal training sessions.
- Review and adjust training materials. Training materials should be more than just “do this to achieve that”. Explaining or showing the big picture of how and why we perform certain tasks is always more beneficial. Seeing the overall, long-term effect makes it easier to understand the process and will further aid in other ERP training efforts.
- Communicate early and often. Make sure there is a timeline established and do your best to stick with it. Throughout the process, stay in touch with trainers and trainees to gage where they’re at, and what their struggles and strengths have been. Also ask for feedback and use the information to help tailor future training.
