Top Questions to Ask Vendors Before Buying ERP Software

Finding an ERP vendor that’s the right fit for your company can be tricky: it requires a tremendous amount of research and time, and it’s one of the most important parts of the ERP software selection process. With so many companies trying to sell you their product, it can be difficult to figure out which vendor is really right for you.

The questions below will help you gather important information from vendors, and allow you to more easily evaluate the best ERP software vendor for your needs.

1. What features does your software suite offer?

Make a list of the functionalities that your organization requires from their ERP software, then compare it to each product’s functionality. Any ERP software vndors that don’t meet all the needs on your list should be removed.

2. What is your company history?

For each vendor you’re considering, make sure you research the following information: their industry reputation, financial history, and their mission. Be wary of any vendor that is unwilling to share these details with you. Having a comprehensive profile of each company’s background will give you a better idea of what to expect from them if you choose them as your partner.

3. Do you have any references?

Ask to speak to other organizations within your industry who use their ERP software product. And don’t just speak to current clients- ask to speak with former clients, as well. Specifically ask for contact information for IT staff, management, and general users at each customer site. This will give you valuable insight into their experience working with the software, as well as customizing and implementing it.

4. Can I try the ERP software out first?

This is the only way you’ll be able to really see whether the software is easy to use and how the interface is set up. Many vendors offer video demonstrations or heavily scripted demos- be wary of these, as they may not give you an accurate idea of the products functionality, or give you enough information about the features you are most interested in. Make sure the vendor is able to give you a highly personalized demo, or better yet, that they will allow you to ‘test drive’ the software for several months before you purchase.
