Warehouse Management Systems: 3 Features to Consider

Warehouse management software systems (WMS) are designed to handle the administrative tasks of managing a warehouse such and inventory management and order processing.

Here is a list of three things to consider when deciding which WMS program is right for your business.

    1. Core vs. Additional Features. While most WMS programs have very similar features including inventory management, order processing, batch tracking, and product movement, consider some of the more specialized features they offer and how they may or may not apply to your business. Evaluate WMS programs based on what could significantly help your company as most will look similar upon original evaluation.
    2. Customer Support. Before deciding upon a WMS program, consider the different customer support options that are offered and what you feel your company will need in the area of technical support. Many companies offer support on a per-instance or hourly rate but some are included as part of the purchase. IF this is the case, make sure that you are clear on exactly what types of support are covered and which might cost extra. Taking the time to evaluate the customer support will pay off in the long run if something were to go wrong with the system.
    3. Software Longevity. This feature is more applicable to the vendor than the software. Here are a couple of important questions to ask you WMS vendor about the future so that you can be confident that the software you purchase will be updated regularly and continue to run as well as it does when you first purchase it. What operating system is the application built on-can it be expanded in the future? What does the vendor have planned for their future? Will they be able to support your company if it experiences rapid growth?
